Long regarded as a legendary workhorse in the freshwater reel scene, Orvis' Hydros lineup recently got a facelift. Besides an aesthetic upgrade, the new Hydros reels are sporting some real technical improvements: a larger arbor for better line retrieval, a fully sealed end-to-end drag, and a nifty conversion system that allows anglers to switch between a left-handed and right-handed retrieve in seconds. The end result is a beautiful reel that lives up to the Orvis standard and promises to deliver cast after cast for years to come. With a very competitive price point and a quality build, the Orvis Hydros is one of our top freshwater reel picks in the shop.

An upgraded drag system

At the core of the Hydros is a fully sealed drag system designed to keep out water, sand, and grit, ensuring consistent performance in any condition. Although standard in saltwater setups, this system is a fantastic upgrade for freshwater applications and will significantly extend the working life of the reel. While outside of it's core use case, the sealed drag means these reels will hold up to light saltwater usage as well.

In the interior of the drag, the stainless steel discs deliver low startup inertia, preventing any lurches or hook pops when a fish goes on its first run. The drag knob is oversized and easy to adjust in the middle of a fight without fumbling with the reel or losing your grip.

Designed for the long haul

To remove unnecessary weight, Orvis designed the new Hydros reel with a narrower spool. Besides cutting extra grams, the narrow channel reduces line slacking. If you've fished wide arbor reels, you may have experienced line clumping up on the reel or coming off in clumps. The Hydros design is largely resistant to this happening. The frame is precision-machined and anodized from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum, giving it a durable build that holds up in any environment. Sporting a matte Type II anodized finish, the Hydros offers a clean look that pairs well with any rod in your quiver.

Stat Cast

  • Offered in 5 sizes: Hydros I (1-3 weight) through Hydros V (9-11 weight)
  • Fully sealed carbon and stainless steel disc drag

"The end result is a beautiful reel that lives up to the Orvis standard and promises to deliver cast after cast for years to come."

The final line

The Orvis Hydros earns its reputation from reliability. The drag is smooth, the build quality is serious, and the weight savings are noticeable from the first cast. Whether you're outfitting your primary freshwater setup or adding to your reel collection, the Hydros punches well above its price point.
